APL is seeking an experienced research scientist to make substantial novel technical contributions in the pursuit of advanced research and innovative applications of AI/ML. Our goal is to discover and implement future combat capabilities that will allow intelligent autonomous systems to out think and outmaneuver the adversary in the domains of air-to-air, space, strike, and electronic warfare. Our team is comprised of highly-educated professionals with diverse, demonstrated expertise in aerospace engineering, optimization and stochastic optimal control, reinforcement learning, machine learning, and the general field of artificial intelligence.

 

As a member of the KVM team at APL, you will:

  • Generate a bold, highimpact research agenda that advances the science and applications of AI/ML to develop novel technical capabilities poised to revolutionize 21st century warfare.
  • Design, implement, and evaluate new algorithms, models, and agents for reinforcement learning, autonomous planning, control, and machine learning more broadly.
  • Expand your software development skillset by working in the uniquely challenging domain of highperformance, real-time autonomy applications for demonstrations both live and in virtual reality / simulation.
  • Collaborate closely with the talented team of scientists and engineers in our group and others across APL.
  • Document and publish your scientific results in academic conferences and journals to advance our collective knowledge in this fastpaced, dynamic field of study.

You meet our required qualifications if you:

 

  • Hold a PhD in computer science, engineering, mathematics, or a similar field. 
  • Have a deep understanding of, and demonstrated expertise on, technical efforts related to AI/ML: reinforcement learning, multiagent and autonomous systems, optimal control theory, robotics, or a closely related area.
  • Have strong, effective communication skills – both verbal and written.
  • Have experience developing AI/ML research prototypes in code, using one or more of scikitlearn, Tensorflow, PyTorch, JAX, or similar machine learning frameworks in Python.
  • Are able to travel within CONUS to U.S. Government and defense contractor’s sites as well as to the work locations of KVM staff.
  • Hold an active Secret security clearance and are able to obtain a Top Secret clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
  • Can demonstrate that you are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. To ensure the safety and well-being of the community, APL has established a policy requiring that all staff be vaccinated against COVID-19. All staff members must provide proof of full vaccination or have an approved medical or religious accommodation by their start date.

 

You meet our preferred minimum requirements if you:

 

  • Have at least 5+ years of relevant experience. 
  • Possess a demonstrated research experience represented by publications in academic conferences and journals, including but not limited to NeurIPS, ICLR, ICML, AAAI, IJCAI, CVPR, AAMAS, UAI, AISTATS, KDD, CoRL, ICCV, IROS, or ACL.
  • Have a track record of proposing, developing, and successfully executing novel research initiatives in the application of AI/ML.
  • Have a strong understanding of stateof-the-art techniques in neural networks and reinforcement learning and/or its subtopics (hierarchical, multi-agent, model-based reinforcement learning).
  • Have experience working with models and simulations using C, C++, Java or other suitable programming languages (besides and in addition to Python).
  • Active Top Secret Clearance.
