The Electromagnetics Systems group is seeking an engineer or scientist to develop innovative machine learning and signal processing algorithms that will transform new and existing maritime RF and communications systems. Our group values innovation, inclusivity, and collaboration and is composed of highly skilled staff who enjoy working together to solve tough problems. We create algorithms, system prototypes, and analysis products that revolutionize the capabilities of maritime electromagnetic systems, including electronic warfare, maritime radar, synthetic aperture radar, and remote sensing systems. Our team of engineers, developers, and scientists has an outstanding 20-year track record of developing and transitioning operational algorithms that generate meaningful information for our warfighters.  

 

As an algorithm development system engineer...

  • Your primary responsibility will be researching advanced machine learning and deep learning algorithms to be used in EW, radar, or related RF systems. 
  • You will work closely with others to develop prototypes and analyze their performance. 
  • You will be an integral member of a team dedicated to the research and development of maritime electromagnetic systems.

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • Possess a BS in engineering, mathematics, applied mathematics, physics, or related technical field.
  • Have four or more years experience developing and training machine learning or deep learning models and are familiar with the theory behind these techniques. 
  • Have relevant experience applying signal processing techniques to time series data.
  • Are familiar with RF waveforms and modulation techniques.
  • Are excited to learn about and apply machine learning to maritime EW, radar, and RF systems.
  • Are proficient in MATLAB, Python, or similar programming languages for algorithm development or data analysis.
  • Demonstrate strong communication and interpersonal skills. Are comfortable writing and presenting about technical topics to peers, managers, and government sponsors. 
  • Are willing and able to work in closed areas.
  • Are able to obtain an Interim Secret level security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain a Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
  • Can demonstrate that you are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. To ensure the safety and well-being of the community, APL has established a policy requiring that all staff be vaccinated against COVID-19. All staff members must provide proof of full vaccination or have an approved medical or religious accommodation by their start date.

 

You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...

  • Possess a MS or PhD in engineering, mathematics, applied mathematics, physics, or related technical field.
  • Have experience applying signal processing, machine learning, or artificial intelligence techniques to data produced by electronic warfare systems, RF systems, communications systems, or remote sensing systems.
  • Have theoretical insight into deep learning and machine learning models including convolutional neural networks for classification, detection, and segmentation; recurrent architectures; generative adversarial networks; or similar models. 
  • Have experience developing and applying machine learning and deep learning architectures using PyTorch, Keras, and/or Tensorflow.
  • Have experience transitioning prototype machine learning architectures into real-time system implementations
  • Have experience with advanced signal processing techniques. 
  • Have experience in technical task leadership.
  • Have an active Secret or higher level security clearance.
