REDD - Research & Exploratory Development Department

Are you passionate about influencing the scientific direction of battery research?

Do you like contributing to creative solutions in a collaborative laboratory environment?

Would you love to work with a group of dedicated technical specialists on projects that are necessary to maintain our national security?

If so, we're looking for someone like you to join our APL team!

The Multifunctional Materials and Nanostructures Group is seeking an engineer with a strong background in battery cell fabrication, materials, and engineering.  The ideal candidate will have a track record in technology development for rechargeable batteries including, but not limited to, Li-ion batteries, and will be dedicated to working in a collaborative laboratory environment.  We are also looking for a candidate who understands the art of solving problems in materials, devices, and processes by being creative and exploratory.  The efforts are expected to solve our sponsor’s challenges, through defining compositions, architectures, and approaches for material systems to achieve targeted performance characteristics.  The successful candidate will require exceptional communication skills and the initiative and persistence to see their tasks to completion.  The position will support on-going research projects in rechargeable, flexible batteries, and the individual will be expected to contribute to new efforts to pursue innovative research!

You will be joining a hardworking team of world-class engineers and scientists passionate about innovation, work ethics, and healthy collaboration.  Our team is committed to excellence in work and diversity. We strive to foster an environment of open communication and continuous improvement.

Your duties will include:

  • As a subject matter expert in battery cell fabrication, materials, and engineering, and a critical contributor in a collaborative laboratory environment where creative solutions are required, you will perform research to meet project objectives and build advanced prototypes for government agencies and sponsors.

  • You will contribute to investigating novel materials and battery concepts, to developing and prototyping materials/batteries, and characterizing materials, batteries, and both conventional and unconventional battery systems through experimentation.

  • You will coordinate detailed data analyses to verify performance and explain characterization/test results.

  • You will document and present technical work internally and externally, publish in high quality journals, and propose applications of technology to our government sponsors.

  • You will serve as an important interface between the battery team and other departments or sectors across the laboratory seeking new battery materials, devices, and systems.

  • You will have the opportunity to pursue innovative research in materials and energy storage technologies.

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • Hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Materials Science and Engineering, or a related discipline.

  • Have a solid understanding of battery materials and fabrication process.

  • Have 1+ years of active laboratory experience in fabricating and testing electrochemical devices and prototyping advanced batteries including Li-ion battery pouch cells.

  • Are a team player and have excellent communication skills.

  • Are willing and able to travel occasionally to attend meetings with sponsors and academic conferences.

  • Are able to obtain a Secret level security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Security clearance eligibility requires you to be a U.S. citizen.

  • Can demonstrate that you are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. To ensure the safety and well-being of the community, APL has established a policy requiring that all staff be vaccinated against COVID-19. All staff members must provide proof of full vaccination or have an approved medical or religious accommodation by their start date.

You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...

  • Hold a Master’s degree in Chemistry, Materials Science and Engineering, or a related discipline.

  • Have 3+ years of active laboratory experience in fabricating and testing electrochemical devices and prototyping advanced batteries including Li-ion battery pouch cells.

  • Have experience with battery electrode fabrication and relevant techniques including slurry preparation, coating, calendaring, etc.

  • Have experience with battery testing techniques and data analysis (galvanostatic charge/discharge, cycle life, rate capability, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy etc.).

  • Have experience with electrolyte characterization (e.g. electrochemical stability window, ionic conductivity, etc.).

  • Have experience in exploring new solutions and processes beyond the generic approaches used for battery fabrication, packaging, and engineering.

  • Have experience in performing milestone-driven battery R&D communicating with industry and/or government sponsors.

  • Have experience with active powder material synthesis and polymer electrolytes.

  • Have experience with textile energy storage technologies.

  • Have experience with materials characterization tools including but not limited to optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectroscopy, etc.

  • Have a strong track record of success through innovative research and publication.
