The Applied Biological Sciences Group (QLA), located within the Asymmetric Operations Sector (AOS), is committed to APL's mission to provide critical contributions to critical challenges. We seek a highly motivated scientist with expertise in bioinformatics and computational biology to perform desired functions. As a Bioinformaticist / Computational Biologist, you will...

- Aid in bridging the gap between basic research and real world impact.

- Support bioinformatics and data science aspects of genomics and systems biology projects.

- Perform analysis using open source tools and custom pipelines on a High Performance Computing (HPC) Cluster.

- Perform bioinformatics tasks operating in a linux environment, using at a minimum BASH, Python, and R languages.

- Perform sequencing data analysis on Illumina, PacBio, and Oxford Nanopore data.

Perform bioinformatics analysis on transcriptomic, proteomic, and metabolomic datasets.

- Maintain internal Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) for sample tracking through analysis pipelines.

- Identify and implement analysis tools for multi-‘omic data mining and fusion.

- Support and eventually lead novel bioinformatics and computational biology tool development.


You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you have:

- an MS, or PhD in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics or some related field and at least 3 years of related experience.

- Experience with BASH, Python, R and Linux environments.

- Ability to model and simulate biological systems in silico using mathematical concepts such as matrices, differential equations, and standard modeling concepts.

- Familiarity with algorithms in computer science and applied mathematics commonly used for analyzing biological data.

- Ability to troubleshoot algorithms and implement software programs for the analysis of such data.

- Ability to scale analyses from low computational loads to high, and visa-versa.

- Ability to keep up to date with open source software and published literature of new tools and examine capabilities and limitations of such tools for sponsor related requirements. 

- Can demonstrate that you are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. To ensure the safety and well-being of the community, APL has established a policy requiring that all staff be vaccinated against COVID-19. All staff members must provide proof of full vaccination or have an approved medical or religious accommodation by their start date.

- Are able to obtain Interim Secret level security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.


You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you have:

- A publication record in computational biology and/or bioinformatics analysis.

- Experience with advanced data science techniques, including machine learning, data wrangling, statistical inference, and high-dimensional data analysis.

- Some experience performing or familiarity with laboratory sequencing preparations and workflows.

- Some experience with molecular and laboratory techniques.

- Experience with cluster computing environment and/or resource schedulers for high throughput (parallel) computations.

- Experience leading a team and leading projects.

- Self-starter with exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate complex topics.

- Experience working in Unclassified and Classified areas.

- Ability to communicate technical constructs and algorithms in simpler terms for external sponsor and internal team presentations.
