We are seeking a Senior Biosafety Specialist to join the Environmental Health and Safety group. You will work alongside highly skilled, dedicated Environmental Health and Safety professionals who share a common goal of ensuring a safe and healthy workplace for our employees.


As part of the EHS team, you will collaborate with APL researchers to enhance our biosafety and lab safety programs. In this role you would provide creative solutions for mitigating risks and ensuring regulatory compliance for our biological (BSL-1 through BSL-3 and Select Agent) and chemical related research.


As a Biosafety/Laboratory Safety Specialist you will:

  • Develop, implement, and coordinate a comprehensive biological safety program that mitigates program risks, enhances the Lab’s research objectives, and ensures regulatory compliance.
  • Serve as the Responsible Officer for APL's CDC Select Agent Program.
  • Recommend, develop, and update policies and procedures related to use of biological and chemical materials.
  • Perform risk assessments of related research projects and proposals and recommend comprehensive risk mitigation strategies.
  • Develop and conduct biological related safety training programs using in-person and virtual formats.
  • Inspect research laboratories and provide recommendations consistent with APL policies, regulatory requirements, and best practices (i.e., NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant or Synthetic Nucleic Acid Molecules).
  • Provide input and oversight for construction of or modifications to biological labs, facilities, and equipment.
  • Participate as a member of APL's Biosafety Committee and Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC).
  • Collaborate with APL’s Medical Director to develop a medical surveillance program to protect staff members who work with biological materials.
  • Connect with relevant regulatory agencies to acquire required permits and registrations and to submit required reports.
  • Coordinate emergency response plans, biological emergency drill plans, and incident investigations with the Environmental Manager and with APL's Fire Department.
  • Maintain proficiency in regulations, standards, guidelines and trends in biosafety and chemistry to anticipate and evaluate their impact on related research programs.
  • Provide back-up support for other EHS programmatic needs.



You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • Completed a Bachelor’s degree in microbiology, molecular biology, chemistry, industrial hygiene, safety, or related field.
  • Served as a biosafety officer with at least 5 years of experience in a diverse research environment
  • Demonstrate a solid understanding of regulatory requirements, including NIH guidelines and OSHA’s Chemical Safety requirements.
  • Demonstrate effective written and verbal communication skills, including experience with group presentations and training.
  • Can obtain a Secret security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.


You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...

  • Worked directly with a CDC Select Agent program, including experience as the Responsible Officer or Assistant Responsible Officer.
  • Maintain professional certification as a Registered Biosafety Professional or Certified Biosafety Professional.
  • Actively participate in professional associations, like ABSA, AIHA
  • Hold an active Secret security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
