Do you love applying your knowledge and skills to seek out hidden trends, patterns, and weak signals?

If so, we're looking for someone like you to join our team at APL to develop novel algorithms for processing sensor data to find patterns and signals, develop exploitable characteristics of those signals, and classify them.

We are seeking an engineer or scientist proficient in developing conceptual algorithms using signal processing and machine learning. Our group culture is naturally collaborative, with highly skilled staff who enjoy working together to tackle tough problems. You will contribute to a creative, dedicated team of developers that is creating and adapting state of the art algorithms to address automation of some of the country's toughest national security problems for the undersea domain, applying sophisticated signal processing, information processing, and machine learning to transform raw sensor data into meaningful information for our warfighters. This team has developed algorithms to process passive sonar, imaging sonar, and active sonar returns to seek and identify various undersea target signatures. Our algorithm team of engineers, developers, and scientists has a stellar 20-year track record of generating new algorithm concepts and transitioning them to real-time algorithms running in operational embedded military systems.

As a conceptual algorithm developer...

  • You will contribute to projects focused on developing cutting-edge algorithms for passive, active, and imaging sonar systems as well as other remote sensing systems for U.S. government sponsors.
  • You will work with sensor data to find hidden patterns and weak signals, identify characteristics, and exploit those characteristics with novel algorithms.
  • You will document your algorithms, algorithm performance, and insights in briefings to leadership and sponsors as required.
  • You will actively engage with group leadership in identifying and executing technical work and internal research and development (IR&D) efforts.

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • Possess a B.S. or higher in Electrical Engineering, Mathematics or Applied Mathematics, Physics, or a related technical discipline.
  • Have 3 or more year's experience applying signal processing, machine learning, or AI to algorithm development and algorithm performance evaluation.
  • Are proficient using Python, MATLAB (or an equivalent language) for algorithm development or data analysis.
  • Are able to communicate clearly and concisely to APL staff, APL management, as well as to external government sponsors, both verbally and in written form.
  • Are able to obtain Interim Secret level security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...

  • Possess a M.S. or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Mathematics or Applied Mathematics, Physics, or a related technical discipline.
  • Have experience applying signal processing, machine learning, or AI for data analysis or algorithm development applied to acoustic sensor, electronic warfare, communications, or remote sensing data.
  • Have leadership experience encompassing task leadership and project management for teams ranging in size from 2 to 5 or more staff.
  • Have a track record of engaging with sponsors or customers to understand their needs, translate those needs to functional capabilities within your organization, and propose new work.
