Embedded Systems Test and Development Engineer

Mechanical Engineering
FPS - Force Projection Sector

Do you find adapting complex simulations to hardware tests exciting and challenging?

Are you looking for meaningful work developing hardware-in-the-loop simulations that support our warfighters?

Do you enjoy collaborating with a team of engineers to ensure successful implementation of advanced weapon system sensors and software?

If so, we're looking for someone like you to join our team at APL.

We are seeking a creative, motivated engineer to help us develop high fidelity hardware-in-the-loop simulations of US weapon systems. You will have opportunities to write simulation control software, implement low-level interfaces to vehicle guidance computers and sensors, and design and build hardware test racks.

You'll participate as a member of hardworking, deeply knowledgeable teams of engineers and software developers all focused on verifying that the hardware used in existing and future weapon systems performs as intended. We use a multi-disciplined approach to connect with specialists from across the Laboratory to build an understanding of the unit under test, develop the simulation architecture, select and assemble the necessary test equipment, and analyze the simulation output.

As an APL Hardware-in-the-Loop Engineer...

  • Your primary responsibility will be to design and build new or augment existing weapon system guidance sections and associated sensor test facilities.
  • You will adapt high fidelity, six degree-of-freedom simulations written in modern C++ or MATLAB/Simulink to run in real-time and interface with hardware.
  • You will write software to collect and analyze simulation data.
  • You will execute hardware-in-the-loop tests to verify contractor designs and summarize findings at sponsor reviews.

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • Possess a BS degree in engineering, physics, computer science, applied mathematics, or a related technical field.
  • Have 2+ years of hardware testing experience.
  • Possess excellent knowledge of modern C++ software development.
  • Have experience with MATLAB/Simulink or systems analysis skills.
  • Have some background in missile flight dynamics or guidance and control.
  • Are able to obtain Interim Secret level security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...

  • Possess an MS or PhD degree in a related technical field.
  • Have experience developing large software architectures.
  • Are also specialized in a related field such as guidance, control, navigation, or dynamics.
  • Active Secret Clearance.
