We are seeking an energy materials researcher who has a strong background in materials design and engineering, energy conversion and storage technologies, and materials synthesis.  The ideal candidate will have a strong track record in applying the principles of science and engineering to experimental materials research in the laboratory environment, employing structure-property relationships to engineer new functional materials.  We are also looking for a candidate who understands the art of solving problems in materials and engineering.  The successful candidate must demonstrate exceptional communication skills and the initiative and patience to see their tasks to completion.

As a materials engineer, you will support on-going research on, including but not limited to, energy conversion and storage materials and devices.  For longer-term career growth in APL, the candidate is expected to explore new efforts for innovative materials research in the future as we believe innovation begins from all levels of experience.  Your imminent duties include:

 

  • Providing support for on-going energy conversion and storage, and thermal materials projects.  Activities include, but are not limited to, developing new materials and devices for flexible batteries, developing new thermally insulating materials, developing new catalytic materials for energy conversion, and process optimization for new material design.

 

  • Interacting with laboratory technicians, scientists, and engineers daily to ensure statement of work tasks are completed within the agreed upon timeframe. Reporting work progress in both oral and written form.

  • Critically thinking about and providing solutions to current shortcomings associated of current technologies/approaches.

  • Pursuing innovative research in materials and power and energy technologies. 

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

  • Contributing to sponsor briefings, white papers, and proposals, and publishing original research in this area and presenting the work at academic and technical conferences.

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

 

  • Hold a Bachelors' Degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline. 

 

  • Have 1+ years of laboratory experience in synthesizing and characterizing materials, and working on functional materials research.

 

  • Are a team player and have excellent communication skills.

 

  • Are willing and able to travel occasionally to attend meetings with sponsors and academic conferences.

  • Are able to obtain a Secret security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

  • Can demonstrate that you are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.   • Hold a Masters' Degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or a related discipline. 

​​​​​​​

  • Have experience with fabricating and characterizing Li-ion batteries including pouch cells.

​​​​​​​

  • Have experience with developing new thermally insulating or conducting materials.

​​​​​​​

  • Have experience with textile energy conversion and storage materials and devices.

​​​​​​​

  • Have experience with air-free chemistry and synthesis approaches.

​​​​​​​

  • Have experience with catalytic energy conversion technologies.
