If so, we're looking for someone like you to join our team at APL.

We are seeking a Fluid Dynamics Laboratory Engineer to help us perform experiments in support of the Navy.  You'll join a team of research scientists and engineers performing experiments to better understand ocean dynamics and ship wakes.  As a member of our team, you'll help design, set-up, and execute experiments in support of our Navy sponsors.

As Facilities Engineer for our laboratories...

  • You'll be responsible for maintaining and operating the equipment in our Hydrodynamics Research Laboratory (HRL) and Ocean Instrumentation Calibration Laboratory (OICL). 
  • Your primary responsibilities will include designing, constructing and executing experiments (performed primarily using saltwater), maintaining and upgrading specialized instrumentation, and managing administrative requirements.  
  • Your secondary responsibilities will include analysis of data collected in these experiments, as well as working with others to analyze data from a wide range of Navy projects.
  • You will assist with periodic upgrades to the facility, including researching and procuring new equipment and installing new hardware and software.  
  • You will perform calibrations of instruments to be deployed during at-sea (ocean) testing, and may assist in the collection and/or analysis of the data.   

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • Have a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or other related field.  
  • Are skilled at working with mechanical and electrical equipment.  
  • Are proficient in the use of data acquisition and analysis software such as Labview, Matlab, Python and/or DaVis.  
  • Are proficient in the use of Windows operating system as well as Microsoft Office programs.
  • Can develop and document technical procedures for laboratory experiments.
  • Are comfortable performing occasionally strenuous physical work moving and maintaining equipment.
  • Are able to obtain an Interim Secret level security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain a final Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...

  • Have 2 or more years of experience working in a laboratory research setting
  • Have used Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) Systems.
  • Have a working knowledge of computer programming in Python, LabView, and/or Matlab.
  • Have experience with the mathematical analysis of laboratory or engineering data.
  • Are familiar with high performance computing clusters.
  • Have experience with laboratory hardware automation.
  • Are willing to travel for and participate in occasional at-sea testing.
