Genomics Research Scientist

Biomedical Systems / Biology
REDD - Research & Exploratory Development Department

Are you passionate about using genome sequencing to understand complex biological communities?

Do you thrive in a diverse, highly-collaborative and dynamic scientific environment?

Are you a creative person that has the ability to work across scientific disciplines to conduct impactful research, overcoming technical and logistical challenges, to solve today’s national security and national health challenges?

If you answered yes to these questions, we're looking for someone like you to join our team, in the Biological Sciences Group at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab.

We are seeking a Genomics Research Scientist to support operational genomics research. As part of the Research and Exploratory Development Department, our group conducts basic and applied research to characterize pathogen evolution and understand complex biological communities. We work to develop advanced genome sequencing and analytical approaches to support rapid data sharing (enabling decision making) and to understand variability in natural populations over time. In this role, you will conduct genomics research for environmental surveillance applications, targeting diverse biologicals ranging from viruses to marine species. You will work with a team of biologists and informatacists to build systems that integrate genomic surveillance capabilities to increase the speed and utility of genomics. You will apply traditional and state of the art approaches to characterize complex microbial and eukaryotic communities, and develop new methods to enable future capabilites.

As a Genomics Research Scientist you will:

  • Conduct basic and applied research and development to collect and analyze genomics data to characterize the genetic diversity of viruses, bacteria, and eukaryotic organisms
  • Establish and maintain collaborative research with national and international laboratories to facilitate sustainable genomics research programs
  • Support new concept development activities to expand utility of operational genomics research across the APL enterprise
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships across the Department, Laboratory, and with external sponsors.

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you…

  • Have a bachelors degree and 2+ years professional experience in biological sciences, molecular biology, genomics, or relevant field.
  • Have experience developing and executing customized, scalable high throughput sequencing protocols, including sample processing, library preparation, and management of sequencing data
  • Have experience with second- and third-generation sequencing platforms (e.g. Illumina, Oxford Nanopore)
  • Have experience with genomics data analysis
  • Are proficient with lab automation/high-throughput sample handling and tracking methods
  • Have strong communication and collaboration skills; ability to lead and contribute to teams from any position
  • Are able to obtain an Interim Secret level security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain a Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...

  • Have a masters degree plus four years professional experience in biological sciences, molecular biology, genomics, or relevant field.
  • Have experience with challenging sample types, such as surface swabs, air samples, or water filters
  • Have publication history that includes work with environmental DNA
  • Are proficient in one or more programming languages
