In APL’s Air and Missile Defense Sector (AMDS), we create innovative solutions to our Nation’s most difficult challenges posed by evolving aircraft, missile, and surface threats. The Radio Frequency and High Powered Microwave Engineering Group (A1B) performs cutting-edge research, development, analysis, and testing of RF seekers, sensors and communication elements, RF aided navigation systems and directed energy defensive weapons.

We are seeking a technically accomplished, organized, and results-oriented engineer with outstanding leadership skills to help A1B develop innovative solutions to the most complex weapons engineering challenges.  As the Group Supervisor, you will lead and inspire about 50 highly skilled technical professionals.

The work of the group centers on AMDS’s active missile portfolio, but extends to include MDA ballistic missile defense (BMD) programs, Tomahawk navigation, and cross-lab HPM testing.  The group maintains and is maturing no less than 5 large-scale research and development facilities and provides significant support to most every A1 Branch facility.

As Group Supervisor, you will set the strategic vision of the group as well as ensure its successful execution by growing, developing, and mentoring the team. You will be responsible for several of AMDS’ most important research, development and testing facilities.  You will tackle our nation’s grandest defense challenges by empowering and developing a diverse and innovative team of world-class signal and RF systems experts with a common and clear vision for success.

Duties:

  • Lead the technical efforts within A1B, and enable and inspire the 50 staff to excel.  
  • Interact with APL Program Managers and key sponsors to identify, propose, and lead complex technical projects. 
  • Oversee the establishment of new technical facilities and the evolution of existing facilities so that AMDS can provide additional value throughout the lifecycle of defensive systems.
  • Provide supervision and staff planning including monitoring technical work for quality and timeliness, balancing and prioritizing task loading, drafting personnel requisitions, interviewing candidates, and making hiring decisions.  
  • Foster and demonstrate collaboration across the branch and sector to maximize the impact of the organization. 
  • Provide meaningful contributions to Branch and Sector level activities and initiatives.

Required Qualifications:

  • MS degree in engineering, physics, computer science, mathematics, or a related field.

  • At least five years of experience in one or more of the following areas: RF systems and signal processing, testing of RF systems, and aerospace or DoD systems that leverage RF active & passive sensors.

  • At least five years of experience leading teams of five or more technical staff.

  • Outstanding leadership attributes, including the ability to motivate and inspire staff.

  • Proven track record in building a technically strong and diverse workforce and in developing future leaders.

  • Demonstrated ability to set direction and implement plans to achieve goals and build capabilities including the pursuit of new initiatives and ability to engage sponsors.

  • Track record of excellent judgment and discretion.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, written and oral communications skills, and organizational skills, with a record of accomplishment in a team environment.

  • Hold an active Secret security clearance and can ultimately obtain a Top Secret clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • PhD in engineering, mathematics, physics or equivalent, with at least 15 years of relevant technical experience.

  • Seven years or more experience managing larger teams of technical staff, including experience as a line manager.

  • Experience working on and leading technical efforts in the air and missile defense community such as Missile Defense Agency (MDA) projects and Navy AAW and/or ballistic missile defense (BMD) weapon systems.

  • Familiarity with APL and AMDS internal processes such as: capital planning, overhead management, staff development/training, IRAD management and quality. 

  • Experience developing, maintaining and evolving R&D test facillities.

  • Demonstrated strategic ability including the development of a shared vision and achievement of goals towards that vision.

  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and develop staff.

  • Demonstrated ability to cultivate strong relationships across organizational boundaries.

  • Proven track record in building a diverse and technically strong workforce and in developing future leaders.

  • Hold an active Top Secret or TS/SCI clearance.
