If so, we're looking for someone like you to join our team at APL. We are seeking a Marine Hydraulic, Power, and High Voltage Technician  to help ensure successful deployment of sophisticated maritime systems. You would support the development of prototype systems from conceptualisation to installation and testing on US Navy ships, to include requirements and specifications development, oversight of fabrication and procurement, and development of Navy coordinated logistics support products including Tech Manuals and training materials.

 

As an Hydraulic, Power and High Voltage Systems Technician  in the Engineering and Test Group, you will:

  • Be responsible for advising scientific crew and engineering team on the most suitable design and impementaton of Hydraulic and Electrical power equipment and distribution systems for use on maritime research vessels.
  • Install and operate oceanographic winches, science displays, and power circuits in portable oceanographic labs; help determine electrical requirements; and supervises adapting and connecting of scientific equipment to shipboard power.
  • Be responsible for planning, installing, maintaining, troubleshooting and repairing electrical power generators, motor generators and distribution & control systems; voltage regulators, high voltage power switches, heavy hydraulic equipment incudign winches and cranes; machinery monitoring and remote control systems; power, control, and display systems of industrial, shipboard and science-related equipment.
  • Design, Install, Test, and Inspect electrical systems, equipment, or parts to spot hazards or defects. Prepare designs, sketches and blueprints to see the placement of wiring or equipment. Work on the installation of ground leads and connect power cables to equipment.
  • Direct or train other employees to put in, maintain, or repair electrical wiring, equipment, or fixtures.

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you have...

  • At least five years of proven relevant experience with planning, design, installation and testing of Industrial / Marine / Shore High Voltage Electrical Power Generation and Distribution Systems in a large organization.  Demonstrated capability with installation and maintenance of high voltage equipment and shore and marine equipment, generators including design of electrical systems for use with worldwide power distribution systems at 50 / 60 Hz. 

  • Excellent communication skills, familiarity with a variety of engine room and ship's electrical systems, the ability to discern and help repair equipment malfunctions and to perform basic mathematical calculations, and demonstrate good safety practices and procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team and possess strong interpersonal, speaking, and technical writing skills.
  • Can support CONUS travel required to attend meetings and testing. Position will require travel to Navy facilities with possible embarkation on U.S. Naval vessels for short periods. Travel may be required to support testing and evaluation of equipment on U.S. Naval vessels.  
  • Are able to obtain an Interim Secret level security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain a final Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
  • Can demonstrate that you are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.   • Relevant industry certifications.
  • Experience with sea tests, installing, testing, and operating hydaulic and high voltage marine systems.
  • Have an active Secret Level clerance.
