The Multifunctional Materials and Nanostructures Group is seeking a materials engineer with hands-on thermal spray experience (e.g., plasma spray, high velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) torch, suspension plasma spray, wire arc, etc.). You will apply your strong background in material processing and testing to advance multi-functional materials for extreme environments (e.g., hypersonic flight, combustors, space exploration, etc.). You will also support the strategy for our team, whose efforts contribute to solving the Government's challenges by defining material compositions, architectures, and approaches to achieve targeted performance.

In this role, you will…

  • Tailor thermal spray processing parameters to create materials with advanced performance in extreme environments.
  • Perform complimentary operations to facilitate material development, such as processing and tailoring powder compositions, spray robot programming, etc., to meet unique processing requirements.
  • Contribute to the development of new processing techniques and the innovative application of materials solutions.
  • Develop test procedures, design experiments, and execute tests to characterize the behavior of materials under high heat flux, oxidative environments.
  • Examine data and interpret results.
  • Document technical work in detail (reports, briefs, procedures, etc.) and present to internal and external stakeholders.

You meet our minimum qualifications for the position if you…

  • Possess a BS in Materials Science & Engineering, Ceramics, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Chemistry, or related field.
  • Have at least 3+ years of hands-on thermal spray experience (e.g., plasma spray, HVOF, suspension plasma spray, wire arc, etc.) in the laboratory.
  • Have the ability to work independently, exercising good technical judgment to solve problems.
  • Have a strong record of successful teamwork.
  • Have excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Are willing and able to perform work in a laboratory setting.
  • Are able to obtain an Interim Secret level security clearance by your start date, and can ultimately obtain a Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.


You'll go above our minimum requirements if you...

  • Perform materials research in areas such as thermal or environmental barrier coatings (TBCs, EBCs), refractory materials, ultra-high temperature ceramics, unique structures, etc., providing groundbreaking performance potential.
  • Have 5+ years of demonstrated ability creating novel multi-functional materials for extreme environments including relevant publications and presentations.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and comprehension of extreme environments, particularly hypersonic challenges.
  • Have experience creating and/or coating complex shapes and prototypes as part of developing solutions to system-level problems.
