We are seeking a highly motivated Molecular Biologist to contribute to a team focused on biothreat detection and synthetic biology. 

 

As part of the Biological Sciences Group, in the Research Exploratory Development Department, you will be at the forefront of APL's mission to provide impactful contributions to critical challenges. You will contribute to building outstanding expertise in molecular biology, in the pursuit of challenges in national security.

 

As a Molecular Biology Associate you will...

 

  • Drive experimental execution across diverse projects involving design and manipulation of novel genetic reagents.

 

  • Support study design, execution, and data analysis.

​​​​​​​

  • Assist and collaborate with scientists in support of laboratory-based experimentation.

​​​​​​​

  • Troubleshoot and optimize experimental protocols.

​​​​​​​

  • Assist with basic laboratory functions (i.e. lab cleanliness and organization, equipment upkeep, etc.).

​​​​​​​

  • Communicate key findings both internally across teams and externally to sponsors.

​​​​​​​

  • Be a part of a team providing leadership in the development of new opportunities and support internal initiatives, driving technical innovation and growth in areas relevant to APL sponsors.

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

  • Participate in the biology and APL community, and present data at lab meetings and to department management.

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

 

  • Have a B.S. in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, or a similar field with 1+ years of experience in a laboratory setting.

 

  • Have a combination of the following skills: design and use of CRISPR/Cas reagents; DNA and RNA manipulation and analysis; qPCR and plate-reader assay development; basic microscopy techniques; and microbial and mammalian cell culture. 

 

  • Have a familiarity designing and hands on experience using gene editing technologies.

  • Are proficient in molecular biology techniques, including design and construction of genetic constructs.

​​​​​​​

  • Have experience designing, running, and troubleshooting a wide range of biological assays.

​​​​​​​

  • Have extensive experience with culture and genetic manipulation of bacteria and yeast.

​​​​​​​

  • Have experience with cell culture, stable transfection, and infection or co-culture with viruses or bacteria.

​​​​​​​

  • Are able to obtain a Secret level security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

​​​​​​​

  • Can demonstrate that you are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...

 

  • Have experience with DNA sequencing technologies and bioinformatics pipelines is a plus.

​​​​​​​

  • Have demonstrated expertise in fluorescence and confocal imaging, including image analysis with Image J or Matlab and immunocytochemistry or immunofluorescence.

​​​​​​​

  • Have experience with recombinant protein expression systems.

​​​​​​​

  • Have experience with plant, marine invertebrate or microbiome systems.

​​​​​​​

  • Have familiarity with RNA/DNA sequencing technologies and bioinformatics pipelines.
