The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Precision Sheet Metal Technician, to join our team. You will be contributing to dynamic, innovative and impactful R&D programs and projects in the National Security, Space and Undersea hardware areas.

 

As a Precision Sheet Metal Technician, you will help us manufacture the next generation spacecraft, undersea hardware, shipboard test systems and communication components. You will have the opportunity to perform programming, setup and fabricating of precision components. You’ll join a multi-disciplinary fabrication team of highly skilled craftsman that support programs varying from R&D prototype to flight hardware, that meets AS9100 standards. 

 

As a Precision Sheet Metal Technician...

 

  • Your primary role will be to setup, program, and operate CNC Laser, CNC Brake presses, CNC Rollers and various equipment for end-to-end manufacturing with minimal supervision.

 

  • Perform in-process inspection using precision measuring instruments (i.e., calipers) ensuring customer's hardware requirements are met.

 

  • Communicate and engage with customers to achieve end objectives.

 

  • Work in a collaborative environment sharing skills and machining knowledge with peers.

 

  • Achieve and maintain proficiency with all applicable quality processes associated with assigned work.

 

  • Monitor and record duration and completion of work performed in Work Management system in accordance with business and Quality procedures.
     

You'll meet our minimum qualifications for the job, if you have...

 

  • A High School degree or equivalent work experience.

 

  • 5+ years experience in programming and operating CNC Lasers and CNC Press Brakes.

 

  • 3 years CAD CAM programming experience, Stryker software experience preferred but not required.

 

  • Experience with importing 3D models into CAD software for developing flat patterns.

 

  • The ability to fabricate, fit and, assemble precision Sheet Metal components per sketches or formal drawings.

 

  • Experience installing fasteners and hardware into Sheet Metal assemblies.

 

  • Excellent verbal communications for interfacing with customers during the fabrication process and with shop management.

 

  • Are able to obtain an Interim Secret level security clearance, by your start date and can ultimately obtain a Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
