SES - Space Exploration Sector

Are you deeply motivated by science questions? Are you trained in science, and love solving problems with clever algorithms and software? Do you enjoy learning new concepts and working with others on innovative projects? Are you also open to working on applied solutions that help keep our country safe?

If so, we are looking for someone like you to join our team at APL.

We are seeking a scientific software developer to help with an array of science-based analysis tasks. Key efforts involve assisting science teams with data-heavy analysis projects in Heliophysics and planetary science. You will draw from your PhD experiences, but also be expected to generalize to other areas. Typical projects include science analysis, algorithm development for higher level products, assisting with calibration and calibration tools, and machine learning / data mining.  We also define and develop software for opportunity analysis and instrument planning and commanding. You’ll be joining a team of engineers and scientists who love to combine their physics, engineering, and math knowledge with software skills to create tools for one-of-a-kind space programs involving both civil space efforts and national security projects.

As a scientific software developer, your primary responsibility will be the support of multiple science projects that need collaborative, cross-disciplinary support, with coding done mainly in Python or Java, but also occasionally IDL and Matlab. The software is the tool, and the successful candidate will be flexible in using the right tool for the job at hand. Also, you will...

  • work on several teams of scientists and developers
  • use your science knowledge to convert ideas into software requirements, designs and tools
  • present results at internal team meetings, to external sponsors, and at occasional conferences
  • use a professional, team-based development process

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you:

  • have a PhD Degree or equivalent in physics, engineering, or math, or a related field
  • have experience with science analysis of space-based data (in-situ or remote sensing)
  • have developed science or simulation codes in Java, Python, or Matlab
  • are willing and able to learn new programming languages
  • have excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • are able to obtain a Secret level security clearance. If selected you will be subject to government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
  • Can demonstrate that you are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. To ensure the safety and well-being of the community, APL has established a policy requiring that all staff be vaccinated against COVID-19. All staff members must provide proof of full vaccination or have an approved medical or religious accommodation by their start date.

You will go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you:

  • have 5+ years of experience with scientific software systems, data management, or data analysis
  • have written software in a team environment or for use by someone other than yourself
  • have demonstrated professional communications via publication of conference talks / posters or at internal team meetings
  • have experience with space-based instrumentation, such as energetic particle instruments, magnetometers, gamma ray detectors or imagers
  • have used machine learning algorithms on time series or image data
