We are seeking a Senior Computer Vision Researcher for the Artificial Intelligence Group in the Research & Exploratory Development Department at APL to help us invent the future of intelligent systems and bring research from concept to reality.  We are a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers focused on pioneering research and real-world impact, particularly in the areas of machine learning, autonomy, applied neuroscience, and robotics. We want someone who is highly skilled and motivated to support and lead projects in machine learning for computer vision, particularly in the application areas of national defense and healthcare.

As a Senior Computer Vision Researcher...

  • Your primary responsibility will be to contribute toward and lead fundamental research in machine perception and develop solutions when presented with broader sponsor needs. This includes, but is not limited to, research in deep learning, adversarial machine learning, contextual intelligence, and common sense reasoning.
  • You will provide technical leadership and vision for multidisciplinary research teams to bring next-generation intelligent systems to reality.
  • You will lead and collaborate on technical proposals to grow and define machine learning and computer vision research in Intelligent Systems.
  • You will communicate research vision, results, and impact to internal management, sponsors, and the broader scientific community through papers, presentations, and technical reports.

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you... 

  • Have a M.S. degree in a relevant field such as Computer Science, Electrical and/or Computer Engineering, Mathematics, or Statistics and 5+ years experience.
  • Have proven ability in defining machine learning research problems and identifying possible solutions given real-world constraints.
  • Have strong programming skills in one or more languages used in machine learning research, such as Python or Matlab, and are familiar with relevant libraries such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, and OpenCV.
  • Have excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to articulate complex technical issues effectively and appropriately for a wide range of audiences.
  • Have a track record of publishing your research in peer-reviewed journals and presenting at technical conferences.
  • You are able to obtain a Secret level security clearance, which requires U.S. Citizenship. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information.

You’ll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you…

  • Have a Ph.D. in a relevant field and 1+ years of research experience.
  • Have experience with project management or leading small teams.
  • Have experience in writing technical proposals or another form of business development.
  • Have experience with sensing and imaging applications for national security.

Special Working Conditions

  • Some travel to conferences, local sponsor sites, or support for field testing may be required.
