Are you currently pursuing ground-breaking research at the intersection of language and artificial intelligence (AI)?

Do you take pride in crafting machine learning and natural language processing (NLP) solutions to meaningful problems?

Do you thrive in an interdisciplinary, collaborative, and creative environment?

If so, we're looking for someone like you to join our team at APL.

We are seeking a Senior Human Language Technology Researcher for the Artificial Intelligence Group in the Research & Exploratory Development Department at APL to help us invent the future of intelligent systems and bring research from concept to reality. We are a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers passionate about pioneering research with real-world impact, particularly in the areas of machine learning, autonomy, applied neuroscience, and robotics. We are seeking a technical expert who is motivated to support and lead projects in machine learning for human language technology, particularly in the application areas of national defense, intelligence, and healthcare.

As a Senior Human Language Technology Researcher...

  • Your main responsibility will be to contribute toward and lead fundamental research in human language technology (HLT) and develop solutions when presented with broader sponsor needs. This includes, but is not limited to, machine learning applied to language data, speech processing, information extraction, machine translation, optical character recognition, and/or other areas of computational linguistics.

  • You will cultivate a long-term vision for your own research interests, and collaborate on technical proposals to bring that vision to reality.

  • You will work together with other researchers to grow and define HLT research within the broader scope of intelligent systems and human-machine teams.

  • You will communicate your research vision, results, and impact to management, government sponsors, and the broader scientific community through papers, presentations, and technical reports.

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • Have a Master’s degree in a relevant scientific, mathematics, or engineering field.

  • Have 5+ years of relevant professional experience conducting research in AI pertaining to human language technology.

  • Have proven ability in defining machine learning research problems and identifying possible solutions given real-world constraints.

  • Have strong programming skills in one or more languages used in AI research, such as Python, and are familiar with machine learning libraries (e.g. TensorFlow, PyTorch, or Scikit-learn) and NLP libraries (e.g. spaCy, HuggingFace).

  • Have excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to articulate complex technical issues for a wide range of audiences.

  • Have a track record of publishing your research in peer-reviewed journals and presenting at scientific conferences.

  • Are able to obtain a Secret level security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

  • Can demonstrate that you are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. To ensure the safety and well-being of the community, APL has established a policy requiring that all staff be vaccinated against COVID-19. All staff members must provide proof of full vaccination or have an approved medical or religious accommodation by their start date.

You’ll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you…

  • Have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in a relevant scientific, mathematics, or engineering field.

  • Have experience with project management or leading small teams.

  • Have experience in writing technical proposals or another form of business development.

  • Have experience with human language technology applications for national security.

SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS
