Senior Neuroanatomy Researcher

Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning/Data Science
REDD - Research & Exploratory Development Department

Do you marvel at the complexity of the brain and seek to demonstrate neuroscience in creative ways?

Does the idea of mapping the brain and understanding anatomy and brain structure at different scales and through different sensors excite you?

Do you want to build a future in which neuroscience provides insight into the next generation of healthcare and artificial intelligence solutions?

Do you have experience leading large research teams, expertise in neuroanatomy, and a passion for discovery?

Are you excited to work in a highly interdisciplinary team to solve critical problems?

If so, we're looking for someone like you to join our team at Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory.

We are seeking a Senior Neuroanatomy Researcher to help analyze, proofread and connect groundbreaking neuroscience data volumes to research questions and applications of interest to the community. You should have extensive experience performing anatomical analysis, including high-resolution (e.g., electron microscopy) analysis and proofreading of automated neural circuit reconstructions. A highly motivated and dedicated Neuroanatomy Researcher will be able to contribute to building outstanding expertise and strategic vectors in pursuit of challenges in neurological sciences across the defense and national health application spaces.

As a Senior Neuroanatomy Researcher you will...

  • Your primary role will be supporting and advancing existing efforts in neuroscience, including understanding existing datasets, developing new technologies to extract knowledge from these datasets, and comparing/contrasting data from different species and resolutions to identify opportunities for analysis and translational impact.

  •  Be an advocate for your subject area and champion the inclusion of neuroscience into projects across APL.

  •  Support study design, execution, and data analysis.

  •  Communicate key findings both internally across teams and externally to sponsors, including in proposal development.

  •  Join a dedicated team and contribute to neuroscience strategy.

  •  Be a part of a team providing leadership in the development of new opportunities and support internal initiatives, driving technical innovation and growth in areas relevant to APL sponsors.

  • Participate in collaboration and innovation opportunities to help ensure the success of APL’s mission.

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you have...

  • A Ph.D in Neuroscience, Neurobiology, Biology, or related subject areas with 20+ years of relevant experience.

  • Demonstrated proficiency proofreading high-resolution data and other related analysis techniques.

  • Experience leading, training, and motivating large teams.

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills; ability to lead and contribute to teams from any position.

  • Are able to obtain a Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Clearance processing is not required to start. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you have...

  • More than 20 years of related experience and strong academic connections.

  • Familiarity working with neuroanatomy in different animal species (e.g., worm, fly, mouse, human).

  • Experience from image acquisition through reconstruction, proofreading, and analysis.

  • Expertise in novel applications of emerging connectomics based technologies.
