We are seeking a Sr. Molecular Biologist to lead and conduct research in synthetic biology, molecular biology and virology. Members of the Biological Sciences Group drive innovation by leveraging knowledge of biology and biological systems to enable new capabilities and solve critical challenges. The Integrated Biosystems Section strives to leverage experimental methods to identify, engineer, and develop novel systems that enable the investigation of sophisticated phenomena and provide accessible, actionable information to the scientific community. The team has expertise in emerging threats, virology, molecular biology, genome editing technologies, and tissue models. 

 

As a Molecular Biologist, you will interact with a diverse and interdisciplinary team, as well as collaborators in other parts of the Lab and other organizations. Successful applicants will have clearly demonstrated expertise in synthetic DNA manipulation (design/optimization, assembly, and characterization), genome editing/engineering, and/or virology and microbiology. 

 


As a Sr. Molecular Biologist you will:

 

  • Conduct basic and applied research and development for microbiology, virology, genome editing, synthetic biology, and related fields.

 

  • Lead projects and teams for both internally funded and externally funded efforts in the research areas mentioned above.

  • Support new business development activities to expand program scope within the Research and Exploratory Development Department, Asymmetric Operations Sector, and other relevant business areas across APL, including concept development, proposal writing, and project execution.

  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships within APL (across the Department and Laboratory) and with external sponsors.

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you…

 

  • Have a PhD in Biology, Molecular Biology, Virology, or similar areas.

 

  • Have experience in molecular biology, virology, synthetic DNA manipulation, genome editing, or a related field with at least 2 years of relevant professional experience that includes wet lab and analytics.

  • Possess a strong leadership skills, including excellent written and verbal communication skills, demonstrated through a combination of publication record, teaching, and professional experience.

​​​​​​​

  • Are able to obtain an Interim Secret level security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain a Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

  • Can demonstrate that you are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. To ensure the safety and well-being of the community, APL has established a policy requiring that all staff be vaccinated against COVID-19. All staff members must provide proof of full vaccination or have an approved medical or religious accommodation by their start date.
