If so, we’re looking for someone like you to join the Editorial & Publications team in the Communications Department at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL).


We’re seeking a talented, creative, highly effective individual to join our team as a Technical Editor. As a member of the team, you will join a staff of dedicated professionals in the area of publications.


As a Technical Editor you will:


  • Edit classified and unclassified technical reports and other communications materials for organization, grammar, usage, and clarity.


  • Input and format text, tables, and graphics.


  • Build and implement page layouts and templates.


  • Reproduce, bind, and disseminate reports, both on paper and via electronic media.
  • Interact with authors and other internal customers to define job requirements and resolve content, production, and scheduling issues.


  • Follow internal and program-specific style guides while editing and formatting.


  • Follow security classification guidelines, as directed by program requirements.


  • Provide editing/desktop publishing support at offsite (out of state) locations for at least two (2) weeks per year.

You will meet the minimum requirements for the job if you have:


  • A Bachelor’s degree in English, Language Arts, or other related technical subject area.


  • 3+ years demonstrated ability editing formal publications and technical documents for organization, grammar, usage, and clarity.


  • Experience formatting documents using paragraph and character styles.


  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.


  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently and on a team.


  • The ability to handle multiple deadlines.


  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, including implementing document templates.


  • The availability to travel to sponsor facilities for at least two (2) weeks per year for work assignments.


  • The ability to obtain a Secret level security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.


  • Can demonstrate that you are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. To ensure the safety and well-being of the community, APL has established a policy requiring that all staff be vaccinated against COVID-19. All staff members must provide proof of full vaccination or have an approved medical or religious accommodation by their start date.


You will go above and beyond the minimum requirements if you have:


  • Proficiency building and maintain document templates in Microsoft Word.


  • Experience in a publishing environment using software other than Word, such as FrameMaker or QuickSilver.


  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud applications, including Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Acrobat.


  • Experience using fields, macros, cross-referencing, and outline numbering for sophisticated, multi-file documents.


  • Knowledge of or experience with HTML, XML, LaTeX, or other markup language.


  • At least a current Secret security clearance.
